Ernest Young is sent from China to the U.S. when he is five by his starving mother. Ernest is half white, his father was a missionary. Ernest is stuck in boarding schools until at age 12 he is raffled off at the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition and ends up being a houseboy in a brothel. Ernest befriends Maisie, the owners daughter, and Fahn, an assistant to the cook. The book alternates between Ernest's childhood and 1962 when another World's Fair is occurring in Seattle.

Review:
The Story: Ernest is a young bi-racial Chinese boy of about 12 who is given away in a raffle at the 1909 Seattle World’s Fair. He is “won” by a “fancy” woman and enters the world of the red light district. Earnest’s story goes back-and-forth between 1909–1911 and 1962 when Seattle is again hosting a World’s Fair.
What I Loved: The writing of course! it’s Jamie Ford after all! I adored sweet, sweet Ernest. He was wonderful. And Professor True. I really liked him as well.
