Ernest Young is sent from China to the U.S. when he is five by his starving mother. Ernest is half white, his father was a missionary. Ernest is stuck in boarding schools until at age 12 he is raffled off at the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition and ends up being a houseboy in a brothel.
