Mother Jones journalist Shane Bauer, after agonies of hand-wringing, decides to tell the truth of who he is on his application as telling a lie is not his style. I feel similarly, but really thought he was doing a little virtue signaling with this. He was imprisoned in Iran and so often had difficulty with feelings of solidarity with the prisoners while service undercover as a prison guard.

Not a representative quote, but still thought-provoking: Comparing solitary confinement (isolation) between two different facilities (Iranian prison and prison company here in US), Shane writes, "the difference between one person's mental stability and another's insanity is found in tiny details"--what the mattress is made of, how often you have to breathe pepper spray, the space for outdoor exercise, the ability to write letters, talk to others, privacy for body functions...
