I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Well, at first I did, anyway. I thought this book was going to be about the origins of Homo sapiens and the early cultures of cave men, and it was. The first half of this book was amazing! Then he decided he needed to describe all of human history, the industrial revolution, the Cold War, capitalism, the pursuit of happiness, yadda yadda yadda... Part Four was exceptionally tedious, and now I’m not so sure I’m going to enjoy his next book (Homo Deus) -

this was much more philosophical and less anthropological than I was expecting. at times it felt like homework, but I'm really glad I read it. it felt good to be thinking about such big picture questions, in the midst of my very quotidian existence. of course the author is not definitively correct about all of these things! But I appreciate the questions he raises and the points he makes as food for thought.
