Both Ji Lin and Ren were compelling characters, each with their own path to walk and their own pasts haunting their decisions. Both characters are very loyal to the people they care about and it came through in various parts of the story. I came to care deeply about them and that made it hard to put the story down.

I also love how Choo weaves in elements of magical realism, based on cultural beliefs, within their storytelling. It adds a magical element that is very immersive, leaving me wondering ...more

This book takes place in 1930s Malaysia. Ren is a houseboy who promised his dying master that he would find his severed finger and return it to his grave. Ji Lin is a young girl working in a dance hall who takes a severed finger in a vial from a client one night. Gradually the stories intertwine and the strange mystery is solved. There is a bit of folklore and legend as well.

I really enjoyed this book! The intriguing folklore about weretiger, the dark secrets and murders, and the intricate setting of Malaysia in 1930s, all were woven nicely into a page turner.

I like all characters, especially the naive Ren- and even the romance plot is not that annoying to me as it usually is, lol. I'm interested in reading more from Yangszw Choo for sure! ...more
