This was an excellent read and I enjoyed it very much. Although I am a fan of the mystery and suspense genre this is the first book that I have read by Laura Lippman even though she has many novels to her name.

Sandy Sanchez is a retired Baltimore cop who now tries to solve cold cases. His latest case is the murder of Julie Saxony in 1986, almost ten years after her married boyfriend, Felix Brewer disappeared. The story jumps between Sandy's investigation and the lives of the Brewers starting with Felix meeting Bambi who becomes his wife. There wasn't much of an actual mystery, more of a character study.

Lippman is one of my very favorite writers because she continues to grow and develop in her craft at a point when most authors with a similar string of past novels are losing steam. This one resonates powerfully - each of Felix's women is distinct, flawed in blinding ways but also possessed of some sense of decency when pushed. Although thing didn't turn out quite the way Felix had imagined, the lives of his extended family were greatly affected by hisdesire to become a non person many years before his actual death. Family dynamics at once at its best and worst.
