I went into this skeptically, because I loved Song of Achilles and I didn't think lightning could strike twice so I doubted Miller could pull it off again. But, for me at least, she pulled it off again. I am now dedicated to reading everything Miller writes, in perpetuity.

Pure storytelling magic.

Madeline Miller is very officially one of my favorite authors now. I loved The Song of Achilles, and Circe -- this book was brilliant. A main character who was complex and thoughtful, wonderful echoes of actual witchcraft, Miller's amazing attention to historical and mythological detail, the beautiful, delicate prose, the attention to Greek language... it's amazing.

3 stars. This was actually a really quick and enjoyable read! The author is a skilled storyteller and it was marvelous to read a story in the Greek mythology setting—it helped me understand and connect many of the stories in a way I never had before.
I have mixed feelings about the main character, Circe. She really does grow and develop as a character, but I did not find her appealing or likeable for a good portion of the novel. She loved her "poor me" status and was self-righteous in the extrem ...more

I liked it. I was expecting to like it more, based on how much my friends liked it. But I didn't find it transformative or inspiring, really, just interesting. 3.5 stars.
