It's a mystery. It's a coming-of-age novel. It's historical fiction. It's philosophical. It's a bit of a romp, even:

This is a book that really exceeded my expectations. I was expecting a light, humorous mystery, and got a pretty profound glimpse into a small community, and some pretty powerful insights into human behavior.

The author is a psychiatrist. And it really shows. The turns of phrase here are numerous and beautiful, but more than that, Cannon takes you inside the minds of several neighbors on a British street. We see their secrets, and the power of gossip and innuendo.

I can't say that I was as blown away by this as some readers seem to have been. I struggled through the first half which I thought was slow going and also I found it difficult to remember who all the characters were. It picked up in the second half and I liked how one thread of the story was explained but was disappointed that the so much was left unanswered. ...more

An interesting story, somewhat reminiscent of "The Girl on the Train" but told through the eyes of a young girl and her friend, as well as through the eyes of some of the residents of her neighborhood, where a neighbor lady has mysteriously vanished, and a mysterious fire had occurred earlier. The reader is kept guessing throughout the story about what happened in both those situations. ...more
