3.5 stars. I really wanted to like this book more than I did. I'm a sucker for any stories set in India, and this mystery set in 1920s Bombay features a smart, strong, and likeable female protagonist. Perveen Mistry is an Oxford- educated lawyer who works for her father's firm, and is eagerly awaiting the day that women can actually belong to the bar. A murder takes place in the estate of one of the law firm's clients, and Perveen must get involved with three Muslim widows, possible suspects, who ...more

Perveen Mistry is the first female lawyer in India. She is helping her father deal with the estate of Omar Farid who left behind three wives who all live in purdah (seclusion). Since Perveen is a female she can interview the wives and find out why they all state that they want to sign their inheritance over to a charity. The book also flashes back four years to when Perveen entered into an unhappy marriage. The setting was interesting and I liked Perveen and her family. I do plan on continuing t ...more

Enjoyed the layered timelines/mysteries. I wonder if I was hoping that Perveen would be more independent of her father/other men on the case, more far-sighted/clear-seeing. Have to admit she was pretty independent and quite bold for the times/circumstances described. Still liked her as a heroine.

Very real fictional characters in a very real time and place along with the history and religion that is woven into this mystery makes it a very interesting and educational read.
