The first half of the book was like a boring YA novel. The characters there were mainly teenagers. As I read it I was so sorry I'd recommended this book for our local reading club. However about half-way through the story picked up and some adult characters and situations began to take center stage. At that point the novel became tolerable, and even a bit interesting.

This book was slow to start, slow enough half way through I read the reviews with spoilers to keep me going. I powered through and finished. I was finally thoroughly enjoying it and invested in the outcome of the story when the book ended. Just sort of fizzled out and then nothing...literally every question in this book aside from who set the house on fire and why never got answered. What a book! This story has so much going on that it is hard to put down. The story opens with a fire of unknown origin, although the family whose house burns blames it on the one daughter. Everyone in the story has issues that are deep and that absorb all their attention, to the point that they don't necessarily pay attention to the others in their family/friendship circle, when to do so would perhaps change everything. This is an amazing book!
