I liked this book for many of the same reasons I liked Everything I Never Told You. The characters were well developed and felt very real. Ng is good at describing the complicated thoughts and emotions that go through her characters' heads while also telling an engaging story that kept me interested from beginning to end.

This book reminds me a lot of The Help. They are different settings, different plots, but both dive deep into a community and a series of characters—and both are well written. I thought Ng's writing was very strong, probably stronger than The Help, but it's been awhile since I've read it. She did a great job bringing in the "fire" motif without being heavy-handed, and her plot drew me in quickly. Her character development was middling.
