I thought that this book was great. It's well written and the story is very interesting because of both the way that Hawley has developed his characters and the way in which he allows the overall story to unfold. Eleven people are on a private jet flying from Martha's Vineyard to New York when the plane crashes. A painter, Scott Burroughs, and a four year old boy, JJ, are the only survivors after Scott conducts an epic swim to get them to safety. The book alternates between Scott's life in the aftermath of the crash and the lives of the victims before the crash. The book has a well deserved condemnation of the current 24 hour tv news cycle. A very short flight on a private jet, with a few very wealthy people and one man who is offered a ride at the last minute, ends with a crash into the sea 16 minutes into the flight. Only two people survive, one of them the last minute addition. He manages to swim to shore with the only other survivor, a child, but that is only the beginning of the story. Interesting story and format, but it left me wanting fewer story threads that went deeper. While the male characters felt layered and complicated, the female characters seemed like hasty sketches, not fully formed. I didn’t love that. I listened on audio, if it had been in paper, I don’t think I would have finished it.
