I stayed up until 2:00 am to finish reading this book, which says a lot because there are few things that will get me to stay up that late voluntarily. This story is funny yet terribly dark in places—sometimes in the same paragraph. Not an easy combination to get right, but this author nailed it. I loved the writing, Eleanor’s voice is original and compelling (reminding me in some ways of Ove in A Man Called Ove). How can you not root for Eleanor?! She's a good but quirky, damaged soul who, through acts of kindness from others and her own accidental act of kindness, discovers her humanity and heals from past atrocities. Such a memorable heroine.

I'd give this book 4.5 stars if I could. I found it far more moving and poignant than I expected. The blurb made it sound a bit silly but it isn't at all. There are some very funny moments, though.
My only complaint is that the character of Eleanor did not quite hang together for me. The Eleanor in some scenes did not seem like the same Eleanor in others. That said, each scene worked on its own so it was easy to suspend disbelief as I went along, even as I was questioning some of it.
