How can you not root for Eleanor?! She's a good but quirky, damaged soul who, through acts of kindness from others and her own accidental act of kindness, discovers her humanity and heals from past atrocities. Such a memorable heroine. ...more

I'd give this book 4.5 stars if I could. I found it far more moving and poignant than I expected. The blurb made it sound a bit silly but it isn't at all. There are some very funny moments, though.

My only complaint is that the character of Eleanor did not quite hang together for me. The Eleanor in some scenes did not seem like the same Eleanor in others. That said, each scene worked on its own so it was easy to suspend disbelief as I went along, even as I was questioning some of it.

This is a difficult book to describe. It was funny and tragic at the same time. The way the story unfolds from Eleanor's perspective is brilliant. I started reading without having any idea what the book was about. Initially I thought it was hilarious, but it quickly becomes dark. Many difficult issues are addressed in a thoughtful way, and I ended up loving Eleanor and her friend Ray. Would read again. ...more

More emotional story vs interesting story (i.e. 😴).

I had trouble buying into Eleanor being extremely well read but misunderstanding context/empathy/social norms...all things research says are enhanced in readers.
