Eleanor Oliphant is not completely fine at all. At first I thought that the book was going to follow a well-worn groove about an odd person and her odd habits, but then began to wonder about her alcohol intake, which seemed a bit excessive though she treats it as completely normal. As the story progresses and the layers are peeled away, the looming shadow of Mummy hovers over everything. The book becomes a rather sweet story about being human and finding a place in the world.

Eleanor s a bit different from everyone around her, she works doing accounts for a graphic design company but doesn't really fit in anywhere. One day Eleanor and Raymond, the work IT guy, help a man who has collapsed in the street and Eleanor's life begins to change. I really liked the two main characters. I came to appreciate Eleanor more as more of her past was reveled. The book is very sad in parts but there are also moments of much needed humor. ...more

Sad, funny, heartwarming. This is a beautifully written story. I was especially captivated by the characters. That is the reason to read this book: to meet these charming characters.
