What Members Thought

Eleanor Oliphant is not completely fine at all. At first I thought that the book was going to follow a well-worn groove about an odd person and her odd habits, but then began to wonder about her alcohol intake, which seemed a bit excessive though she treats it as completely normal. As the story progresses and the layers are peeled away, the looming shadow of Mummy hovers over everything. The book becomes a rather sweet story about being human and finding a place in the world.

Eleanor s a bit different from everyone around her, she works doing accounts for a graphic design company but doesn't really fit in anywhere. One day Eleanor and Raymond, the work IT guy, help a man who has collapsed in the street and Eleanor's life begins to change. I really liked the two main characters. I came to appreciate Eleanor more as more of her past was reveled. The book is very sad in parts but there are also moments of much needed humor.
