This was more of a 4.5 for me but I'm rounding up because I'm a glass-half-full type of person. Eleanor is a quirky, loveable character and I always root for the underdog. Her vocabulary was super annoying but I know that is part of her character.. well, I certainly learned a few new words! ...more

Eleanor Oliphant is not completely fine at all. At first I thought that the book was going to follow a well-worn groove about an odd person and her odd habits, but then began to wonder about her alcohol intake, which seemed a bit excessive though she treats it as completely normal. As the story progresses and the layers are peeled away, the looming shadow of Mummy hovers over everything. The book becomes a rather sweet story about being human and finding a place in the world.

Eleanor Oliphant is really likable despite some unusual habits. I listened to this one and loved the Scottish accents. She has been through some super tough stuff and has been not dealing with them on her own. It’s great that she gradually opens up and lets others help her deal with them. This one has some swearing, including the F-word and deals with some tough things that would make me hesitant to recommend to a teen. I did enjoy it overall though.

The author's choice of diction for Eleanor was a visual and audible pool of pleasure! Perhaps we all could emulate Eleanor's comfort in her lack of knowledge in modern slang, disappointment in disheveled appearances, concern for others opinions, and her lack of FOMO. Love for oneself and others can be defined in so many ways as well as how we ...more
