The book follows the life of the family over a period time that included flashbacks to the deaths of two important characters who both continue to impact the family in present day. Ward's writing is beautiful. Listening to this book on audio was highly rewarding. This books is very difficult to stomach in parts, I almost thought I wouldn’t be able to continue but I did. I am so glad I did! Amazing story with rich characters and magical realism, I think it may haunt me and stay with me for a long time.

I made it to about the half-way line but people, it was a slog. This one is just not for me. It is too grim. Too little happens. And if nothing happens, then a lot must happen inside / the characters must compel me / the prose must be gorgeous. But for me there were no compensations of this kind. Sorry, much-beloved book of others, I had to give you up. I was only persevering in order to tick that Reading Women Challenge 2019 bonus box.
