The book alternates between telling the story of Charlie St. Clair in 1945 and Eve Gardiner in 1915. charlie is 19 and pregnant. She runs away from her mother en route to Switzerland and finds Eve and her chauffeur Finn who may know the whereabouts of her cousin Rose who went missing during WWII. As they begin the search for Rose the book goes back to Eve's time as a spy during WWI. The book was interesting and I liked all the main characters. This one hopped up from two to three stars when I read the epilogue and learned many of the characters were real people. Love me some accurate historical fiction.
The book is chockfull of romantic cliches, but it was an easy read and I can’t say I hated it since I wanted to reach the end and see her wrap up every bit of the story (which she predictably did).

I will miss the characters now that I have finished the book. I can see why people were drawn to the WW1 story more than WWII, but both taught me something about the times. And I found the growth of Charlie realistic and helpful for moving the story ahead. Eve is the more interesting of the two women, but I felt like the story trajectories assisted one another in a very complementary manner and kept my interest.
