This lived up to every bit of the hype, and also lived up to the reputation of hard to describe. Every time I'd heard it mentioned, it sounded good, nice, but a little dull. I suspected from the quality of those that recommended it to me that it would indeed be great, but it's just hard to pick up a book that doesn't sound compelling. From now on, when someone says a book is hard to describe, I'll listen extra.

Jayber Crow is orphaned and institutionalized in a children's home early in life. He thinks about becoming a preacher, but instead he returns to his hometown and becomes a barber. Jayber reflects upon all the events of his life, and comes to some wise conclusions.
This book will probably be on my list of favorite books of the year. I adore Jayber Crow and his town and his friends in the town.

At first, this appears to be a nice little story about life in a small town for Jayber Crow. However, it quickly becomes a platform for Wendell Berry's philisophical views, which are very interesting, but often distracting from the story. I read this book because I'm a big fan of John McCutcheon, and I heard him praise it once. After reading it, I did a little research on Wendell Berry. The world would be a much better place if everyone was like Mr. Berry. Even though his ideals are very noble,
