The pace of this novel is about the same as the deterioration of Hundreds, (the house which is central to the story) in real time. Sloooooooow.
I think there are much better examples of this type of tale: "Turn of the Screw" being the most obvious. None of the characters is particularly likeable, and though we have plenty of time (500 pages) to get to know them, by the end of the book they are still almost strangers. I loved this throwback to the British Gothic novel. This one really addresses the crumbling British aristocracy and ideas of class and gender. Absolutely mesmerizing.

The writing is good but the story is repetitive and moves slowly, leaving you at the end with a sense that you missed out on something. You don't get a good insight into the characters.
