This is surprisingly ho-hum, especially considering it's a heist story complete with double-crossing and miscellaneous subterfuge set in an alternate history Louisiana, with hippos. All of the characters felt artificial, the action was often difficult for me to follow, and the book seemed inordinately pleased with itself. It just didn't work for me.
I was excited to see a bartender named Nadine in chapter one, though! Unfortunately, she did not show up again in the story. ...more

What a strange book! I had to go back to questions & other Goodreaders' reviews a couple of times just to try & acclimate myself to the story. In the end, I wavered between 2 & 3 stars. Trust me, I would not have finished reading it, if it wasn't my Read Harder challenge choice.

This book was strange, funny, and awesome! What if a crazy idea that was floated in by a US government official in the 1890s to introduce hippos to the Mississippi river as a meat source (true story) had been adopted? It would be this book. A rip-roaring read filled diverse characters, wit, and delightful criminals. Loved it!! And great on #audio.
