A prequel to Hamlet? Why not? This book is beautifully written and tackles many questions Shakespeare's modern audiences may have by telling the backstory through the eyes of Gertrude, Hamlet's mother. Of course, Updike has to draw on his own understanding of the play, so there is plenty to quibble with but overall an intriguing read that reminded me of many reasons why Hamlet continues to intrigue us.
