What Members Thought

Doctor Thorne kept me company during a hurricane. I don't really understand how anyone could possibly not love Anthony Trollope. This 624 page novel went incredibly fast. Trollope is more courteous, more solicitous, gentler and kinder to his readers than any other author I know. I almost thought he might even pour my tea. The story, that of a romance complicated by societal predjudice, has been told by many authors, in many times and places. But the way he tells the tale is just incomparable.

The hopeless romantic in me really loved this book, even though it is a bit predictable. As always, where Trollope shines is characterization. The main characters became so real to me that I started speculating about their futures beyond the pages. Although this was a five-star read for the first 2/3 of the book, I felt that Trollope drew the resolution out far too long, and the book would have been stronger with about 100 pages cut.

This may very well have just become my favorite book. I liked it much more than "The Warden." The humor was wonderful but he was also able to portray the souls of these characters. While the writing is spectacular, I am sure the reader, Simon Vance, was also responsible for part of the delight of this book. The characters were my companions through dishes and laundry, cleaning and driving. I would definitely listen again in the future. It was a 20 hour audio book and I just don't think I have th

My first Trollope novel, but definitely not my last. I am absolutely going to pick up the rest in the Barchester Chronicles. I read this one for the high-brow reason of wanting to read Kevin Kwan's new release Lies and Weddings, which is a Doctor Thorne retelling. I can see why he used it for his Crazy Rich Asians world with the emphasis on class and money.

Third book in Trollope's six-book Chronicles of Barsetshire series, published in the late 1800s (Victorian era). A slow, meandering, completely predictable romance with inevitable obstacles to overcome and the usual Victorian themes and conventions, without really any of the freshness of or as enjoyable as the earlier books in this series.
