The Bear and the Nightingale is a captivating read. Katherine Arden is incredibly talented at setting the scene and making the reader feel as though they are right there in medieval Russia. The storyline was easy to follow and enjoyable, and I'm looking forward to finishing this series.

A wonderful re-imagining of Russian fairy tales. I really liked the way that Arden leaned on some tropes (the jealous, evil stepmother, for one) but inverts others, ((view spoiler) ). Plus, there's great politics and intrigue that keeps pushing the plot forward in ways that I wouldn't have expected

Only the second audiobook I’ve ever finished. Really enjoyed the narrator’s pronunciation of names & places. A lovely, well-spun tale - is it a fairy tale retelling? I’ve no idea. It reads a bit like a fairy tale, though the characters have mundane concerns that make them relatable, within themes that resonate.
