Ok, so I did go back to book one after reading one that was much later in the series. Pendergast remains an enigmatic figure with little character but an uncanny ability to nut out things that ordinary detectives just can't. It's ok, but isn't nearly as polished as the later one. Also, the ending seems to suggest that this particular tale has another part to it- so onto the second book I'll go- after a decent interval. ...more

I rarely read horror books. I watch horror movies annually for the cathartic screaming, but with this book, I found myself tossing the Kindle away in fright. Good times.
