An interesting look at the NYC art scene in the late 1960s to early 1970s, and in particular, the relationship between Patti Smith and Robert Maplethorpe. Smith is definitely a Cool Girl, and she and Maplethorpe had a symbiotic, kindred spirit type of relationship that in my opinion, led them both to success, because of their commitment to their art and ultimately, to each other. Smith's book is actually a tribute to the best friend that she had ever had and one that she continues to miss dearly

3.5 stars really. The writing is beautiful, but I didn't love this book as much as I wanted to. The descriptions of New York and the beatnik scene were wonderful, but I couldn't quite relate to her or the starving artist lifestyle.

I had never heard of this author until I read this book, but she impressed me with her story in many ways. A product of her era which roughly parallels my own, I got a different look at the 60's and 70's than what I experienced myself.

Idk much about Patti and Robert but it was lovely reading about leads who were compelled to create art that they were willing to starve. I liked the photographs too since I didn't have to imagine the descriptions but sometimes I wished they were in color.

I love a book that makes me interested in learning more. Through the Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe story, I spent additional hours reading other stories about music, art, fringe culture, and NYC in the 70s. There are moments of beautiful writing in the book, although it may not have been award-winning in my opinion.
