Set mostly in 1860, the book opens with a Merrick, a smuggler/botanist for the East India Company convalescing at his family's ramshackle mansion in Cornwall. As malaria threatens the stability of British India, an old friend (based on a real historical figure) recruits him for an expedition to Peru. There, they hope to be able to steal some cuttings from the tree that quinine is derived from, and sneak them out to be grown in the far East. This was a really engrossing, fun book. Merrick, a former smuggler for the British East India Company is also the second son of a decayed gentry family. Sidelined at home with a badly damaged leg, he assumes his traveling days are over. However, when his brother threatens to get him a position as a country parson and his old friend, Clem, comes calling with a summons from the company to smuggle cinchona trees from Peru to British India, Merrick feels the call of adventure and heads out.

Even though I’m reading this for the fourth or fifth time, I always find something new, or something I had forgotten. A warm hug of a book.
