Sebastian St Cyr is attending a party when a murdered woman is found dead in the arms of the Prince regent. Sebastian is drawn into the investigation because a necklace that belonged to his mother, who was presumed to have drowned when Sebastian was a child, is found around the murdered woman's neck.
