In short: I expected some kind of a more mystery plot but this book gave me less. The writing style is interesting but sometimes repetitive.

Nadia Turner takes up with the pastors son Luke Sheppard shortly after her mothers suicide. After Luke abandons her in a time of need Nadia spends the summer before college befriending Aubrey. The story covers about 6 years in the characters lives. Of course a love triangle forms and Nadia continues to be haunted by the spring before college. The writing was beautiful in spots but I really don't see what the whole point of the story is. The story doesn't really come to any sort of resolution whi

Most of the characters are quite complex though the reader must be patient to see the impact of various events and the characters’ reflections on those events to see the full depth. It shows how profound the impact of secrets can be. I enjoyed the character development and the story overall, though the way that adults can particularly or unknowingly affect the younger generations so negatively was a harsh reality to face. But that is what made me reflect on the way community has played a role in

One of my favorite books of this year. Bennett's writing is lovely and the precision of her language is impeccable. I listened to this book on audio and found it beautiful. It's about two girls, their families and the boys that they come across while living in a small, religious community in Oceanside, California. I love reading books about people who are trying to grapple with the challenges in their lives, while making the right choices and trying to stay on path to achieve the goals that they

Ho hum. This was OK and held my attention for pages at a time but it was nowhere near as compelling as Bennett's The Vanishing Half. There is an event I won't spoiler at the start and it may trigger some. I wasn't triggered as such but certainly made uncomfortable by it and I suppose that is a good effect of the book: to be rattled out of one's complacency and comfort zone a little. But then I also thought that this event was made to bear more narrative burdens than it could satisfactorily manag

Gorgeous prose, compelling and complicated characters that I loved even while I was cringing hoping they'd make different choices. Unbelievably strong for a debut novel. I can't wait to read her next book!
