In short: I expected some kind of a more mystery plot but this book gave me less. The writing style is interesting but sometimes repetitive.

A good read, but an odd one. Because we learn "the secret" so early, it feels like it takes away the drama from others involved learning it.
Sweet in the way this community has so many ties that bind, but a story that ultimately feels as though it ends without a true payoff. ...more

I really enjoyed this, but I feel like maybe I didn't fully understand it, or maybe it missed the mark a bit, or maybe I expected it to be more than it was.
Nadia and Aubrey and Luke were all wonderfully real characters, and my heart ached for them as they went through their troubles. But I never fully bought in to how strongly Nadia's and Luke's past weighed ...more
Could you be nostalgic for a friendship that wasn’t over yet or did the fact that you were nostalgic mean that it already was?

I love this book!!!!! Seriously, it's usually hard for me to like a female character that seems to be a victim. But surprisingly I like Nadia Turner, with all her flaws and problems and mistakes, because she feels so relatable even though not easy to be liked. I also like how the hidden narrators, the Mothers of the church, keep coming and going during the book, giving an unusual atmosphere that fits with the story.

One of my favorite books of this year. Bennett's writing is lovely and the precision of her language is impeccable. I listened to this book on audio and found it beautiful. It's about two girls, their families and the boys that they come across while living in a small, religious community in Oceanside, California. I love reading books about people who are trying to grapple with the challenges in their lives, while making the right choices and trying to stay on path to achieve the goals that they

Gorgeous prose, compelling and complicated characters that I loved even while I was cringing hoping they'd make different choices. Unbelievably strong for a debut novel. I can't wait to read her next book!
