1.5 stars, rounded up to 2 stars, because that's a gorgeous cover.

I had really been looking forward to reading this, and this was really, really disappointing.

It starts off great, with a kapow first line:
In my dream, the girl was drifting, far, far below the crashing waves and the cries of the gulls in the cold, sunless depths of the North Sea.

Ooh, chills, right? Then we go back in time about a week or so, to where it all started, and it all goes to shit.

The crux here, of course, is that

I really enjoyed this book and read it in 2 days - couldn't put it down. That said, this is not my "typical book". I love historical fiction and pithy reads. This is a fun thriller and mystery - and as I said, it's not my usual genre. However, the lead was a strong female, with good character development and the rest of the cast was interesting. My first time reading Ruth Ware's book (despite the hype) - and I have to admit that I pretty enjoyed it. I know that this book got mixed reviews - about the unlikable character, the "doesn't make any sense" plot and ending - but for this type of book, I think The Woman in Cabin 10 is not all disappointment. True, there are some loopholes here and there, and some unnecessary scenes and dragging plots. But overall it is an enjoyable "summer holiday type of thriller read" that's quite fast paced a ...more

Remember those old Agatha Christie books where there's a group of people stranded in a mansion or on a train and one of them is a murderer, but they can't call the police because the phone lines have been cut? This book felt like a throwback to those old stories. Except instead of a mansion, it's a boat (bigger than a yacht but smaller than a cruise liner) and instead of the phone lines, there's no internet. And how do you investigate a murder when there's no victim? Our (possibly unreliable?) n ...more

Well ... the "twist" was clever and genuinely surprised me. And there were a couple chapters where it felt like the protagonist was reasonably perceptive and enjoyable to inhabit the mind of. My primary objections were that Lo was incredibly indecisive and self-loathing, and while ostensibly a travel journalist for over 10 years, showed no sign of the skills of the trade or any particular work ethic. This is all blamed on her being shaken up for the traumatic event at the beginning of the story, ...more

I listened to the audio version and I think the woman reading it was distracting.

Despite some slow patches and a few flaws, a pretty solid story that kept me reading til the end. Great if you're in the mood for a mystery. ...more
