I loved this book. Though I was pulled in by the comparison to Deliverance, one of my all-time favorite novels, this book delivers everything wonderful about that novel but under its own terms. These women are immediately whole, knowable entities in the world, and their separate exuberance for life, overt vulnerabilities, and abilities to meet challenges made me care about them right away. Wini Allen and her 3 friends take a vacation together every year. This year Pia has decided they should go river rafting in Maine. Their guide is a 20 year old college student who is leading his first rafting trip. The book is very slow to get going. There is a freak event that happens, given away in the book jacket, but this event doesn't happen until over halfway through the book.
