Tannie Maria writes a cooking column for her local paper which soon becomes and advice column with lots of recipes thrown in. One person writing for advice is being abused by her husband. When the woman turns up dead Maria and her fellow newspaper workers, Hattie and Josie, decide to conduct their own investigation into the crimes. This was a really good book, set in South Africa, and very similar in tone and style to Alexander Mccall Smith's "No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" mysteries, which I love. The main character, Tannie Maria, is very humble, yet very intelligent and compassionate, and is an endearing character, one of the type that makes you wonder what they are doing now, after you have finished the book. So happy to have discovered this in our Little Free Library! I have a soft spot for the Precious Ramotswe series and this has the same vibes plus with food. (Of course, Alex McCall wrote a blurb.)
I kept craving chocolate cake while reading it. I also liked googling all the Afrikaans words and I learned that Afrikaans shares some words with German like Danke and Lekker. I'd love to continue the series!
