I can see why this has become a modern classic because of Heinlein's take on the ultimate foreigner, but I find this to be somewhat painful reading as a woman in 2014. While Heinlein could have the imagination to picture a world fundamentally different from ours in his version of Mars, the fact that he can't imagine women as anything more than visually appealing secretaries and nurses is something of a failure of imagination. Touted s a classic of the science fiction genre, I can see why. Heinlein creates a world for his characters, lays down the groundrules for the way things work in this imagined world, and goes on from there. A Martian adapting to life on Earth has a lot to learn, and the people on Earth have a lot to learn from him.
