Wow! What a powerful short story. The beginning reminds me of my own difficulties with post-partum depression. But how sad that she slips further away and it happens so quickly due to the imposed isolation treatment plan.

This is one amazing little book. A highly feminist story that deals with the role of women as wife and mother and how many succumb to the pressures and lose who they are individually and tend to give up on their dreams. (I know there are probably to many "ands" in that sentence) The story is narrated by a woman who is confined after the birth of her child to cure her "nervous condition". The stories remind us of the deep roots of the patriarchal society that while it has shifted often seem to easy to forget. The stories seem dated, which is a good thing, but the cry for autonomy and independence still feels timely and relevant.
Listened to a podcast one time on a road trip home from Monterey.
