I found this book by Joan Didion completely fascinating. I'd always wanted to learn more about Didion because she was an intelligent, feminist, revered and talented author, and a fashion icon. That she was married to "one of the Dunne brothers" was also highly interesting as I grew watching and listening to Dominick Dunne (on TV).
I loved this book/bio so much that it might be one of the few books/novels that I'll enjoy rereading at some point. I admire Didion's honesty and grit, her love of fam ...more

"I know why we try to keep the dead alive: we try to keep them alive in order to keep them with us.
I also know that if we are to live ourselves there comes a point in which we must relinquish the dead, let them go, keep them dead.

Let them become the name on the trust accounts.
Let go of them in the water.
Knowing this does not make it any easier..."

A really lovely book. I've always loved Didion, and I love the way her books now fully track her life. I actually learned from this book as well--I think anyone going through grief and mourning of any sort (and I like how she distinguishes the two) would. I've lost so much in the past three years, and had so many crises, with more imminent on the horizon. This will be a good book to return to--as Didion has been a model for me in my early life, perhaps she ever shall be.

This book is a beautiful reflection on grief and what it's like to lose a person that you shared so much with. I think it will be something I revisit again but hopefully not any time soon.
