When A.S. Byatt hits the mark, A.S. Byatt hits the mark. This was a gorgeous story. There's a healthy dose of auto-biography in here, but in presenting these pieces of herself to us she really gives us something deeper: So many of us have also been the thin child, disillusioned with twee displays of religion, looking for harsher, harder stories, heavier myths.
