I didn't figure it out! I was all set to give this 3 stars, because I didn't care for all the time spent inside the killer's head, but then there was the surprise twist, and then the ending, which seems very obvious but I didn't suspect at all (and I should have known it would go that way, because the other two Cormoran Strike mysteries also had obvious killers that I didn't suspect at all), so that was all very satisfying.

While much of the book dwells on the Strike/Robin/Matthew triangle and the complex emotional weather system surrounding it, the mystery itself is solid and offers a final twist both unexpected and plausible. I'd also be interested to see a little more exploration of Strike's early years and the unresolved issues there, and this series entry would make a fine jumping-off point for that.

Ha! I'm a bit torn. I like the development of the characters, how we were taken to get to know Cormoran and even Robin more through their pasts, but I think the mystery plot is a bit bland. I especially didn't really like the "murderer's point of view" chapters, because it reminds me of James Patterson's books, the ones that have lazy plots. The twist is not as surprising as the previous books, too, even though it's still a decent ending.
