My ideas for self-expression usually do not involve painting a gigantic abstract face with every sort of bodily fluid while intoxicated. What about if the proceeds from the sale of such a painting would help to “rescue” a girl from a war-torn region? Hardly.

Why do we make art?
As an outlet for anger, violence, disappointment, and possibly rejection according to this book.

Heavy.
Visceral.
I picked it up from the library, started it at lunch, finished it before dinner.

8 years later, I accidentally read this again and I’m glad. This is not something to rush through (see above). I want to read more of her work.
