A book ahead of it's time(1965) because the character Jane is truly the heroine.
Yes , the Dark is Rising is epic and amazing, BUT this modest little book sets the stage for the whole saga AND beautifully gives the female child reader a resourceful and smart role model.
Indeed Jane reappears later in the series and proves her worth once again.
Excellent literature needs no age limitations. .. . ...more

Siblings Simon, Jane and Barney are on vacation in the Cornwall area with their parents and their great uncle Merry. While playing in the attic of the house they find a very old map. Merry says he's been searching for the map and it leads to a relic from the time of king Arthur. He also says it's important in the battle between Light and Dark.
