What Members Thought

I am not well versed in the history of this time period (1930's - 1950's) in the world with the exception of the United States so this novel filled a void in my education despite the fact that it is fiction. Moreover, Rostov is an engaging character forced to deal with circumstances with which he is unaccustomed. This book has an interesting premise and is beautifully written, but felt a little too long. Alexander was part of Russia’s extended royal family and when the Bolshevik’s come to power he is out under house arrest in the finest hotel in Moscow. He lives there for decades. It is interesting how he can still live a fulfilling life within such a small sphere. His greatest joys end up being the two young girls that enter his life.
