What Members Thought
I almost gave up, early in. Nothing was happening. No conversations. Little character development. No action.
It continued this way for quite some time. Maybe a third of the book.
And then, finally, everything turned for me. The cat took on significance. The main characters, the man and woman renting the cottage, took on significance. Renting itself took on significance. It all came together into a beautiful, thoughtful novel.

A perfect sweet little gem of a book. It is full of quiet poetry. Nothing much happens. Then it breaks your heart on p.80 and again on the penultimate page. After having read a series of rage-inducing books (gender-bias in data, racism) and plot-driven books of epic action, supernatural battle and torture, it was balm to turn to a different kind of novel. So often plot is described as fuelling a novel but the novel form is also good at another thing: description.
