Agnieszka lives in a valley that has a corrupt wood on it's edge. The valley is protected by a wizard known as the dragon in exchange every ten years he takes a girl from the valley to live with him. Everyone knows Agnieszka's best friend Kasia will be the next one picked so it's a big surprise when he picks Agnieszka instead. The writing style is a little jarring for my tastes and hard to get into at first but eventually flows you down into it. The plot felt a bit predictable or at least very familiar to some distance stories I read as a kid. The setting was nicely built but did feel a bit insular as stories of old. ...Somewhat interested to read the other, Dragon series but maybe after a couple other books.
