Brilliant! post-apocalypse story with a twist and some moral dilemmas. The kind of book that you could stay up all night finishing.

Melanie is a 10 year old girl who is kept in a cell. She's brought to class each day strapped to a wheelchair. Her favorite teacher is Ms. Justineau. Gradually we learn more about what's going on and as events unfold Melanie along with four others are on the run. The story alternates between the perspectives of the five main characters. I had an idea of the initial twist but didn't predict the end which was nice. An interesting spin on this genre. ...more

What an enjoyable read this was. I’m no connoisseur of zombie fiction, but other Goodreaders are saying that The Girl with All the Gifts is doing something fresh in this genre. Joss Whedon loves it and the author, Mike Carey, writes for Marvel Comics, if these tidbits mean anything to you. All I know is that this is a wholly entertaining story that made me stay up late and wake up early to gobble it all up. It’s as simple as that.

The first 10 pages are great, but the story went downhill from there. The premise makes no sense. "Station Eleven" is a much better post-apocalypse novel. ...more
