What an amazing book! There are so many truths about life, people, and situations in this book that I just wanted to write down passages and quotes from it for myself just to remember the great concepts. The characters are unique and interesting and the reader finds a lot to connect with in the many personalities shown here. The plot is very interesting and the emotions displayed make you think as you read it. Definitely a good read!
This book was VERY french - the men were very emotional and talked about their sad deep feelings all the time. I had to get used to this and I actually started the book twice. But once they got on the river and started their adventure I went with the flow (yes figuratively) and enjoyed all their stories. The last third was my favorite with a very satisfying ending and because I got so used to the extreme romanticism, I found it believable. Part travelogue and part book lovers homage to reading.

I found this book to be marvelous. I also believe that will only be the case for some people. It's a story about healing from all forms of grief. But keep in mind, it's also a Romance Novel. Oops. I didn't pick up on that when I grabbed it, and I think that's why so many readers have reported feeling betrayed. Well, it's been a hard year, Christmas just happened, and I welcomed this unexpected, overblown French love story.

If I won the lottery, I'd buy a book barge, and that would be my job. But, I didn't have the idea to do it in Europe. That would be even better.
I liked setting and characters, and could empathize with Jean Perdue. Lovely description of a trip Jean and Manon take to Camargue France. Tragedy struck their love early in the story and didn't let up much. ...more

This book started out well, and I wanted to like it, but it didn't sustain my interest. I got to a certain point, was turned off, and just gave up on it. Then my library loan ended. Perhaps I didn't give it a fair trial—might try reading it again later.

Beautiful writing, beautiful story--so happy I read it this particular weekend.
