3.75 stars really. This premise of this book was good. Jean Perdu owns a book barge that is docked on the Seine in Paris. He pairs people with books that they need to read, therapeutically. He comments to himself that he wished he could find the book that could heal him. In the end, I believe he did, he just didn't know it.

The book didn't quite make a 4 star because it had too much romance in it. I kept comparing it to The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry, and it just didn't quite measure up.

I found this book to be marvelous. I also believe that will only be the case for some people. It's a story about healing from all forms of grief. But keep in mind, it's also a Romance Novel. Oops. I didn't pick up on that when I grabbed it, and I think that's why so many readers have reported feeling betrayed. If I won the lottery, I'd buy a book barge, and that would be my job. But, I didn't have the idea to do it in Europe. That would be even better.
I liked setting and characters, and could empathize with Jean Perdue. Lovely description of a trip Jean and Manon take to Camargue France. Tragedy struck their love early in the story and didn't let up much.

Charming, surprisingly complex, quietly revolutionary. This book weaves love, grief, and an adoration for the written word that is both inspiring and heartbreaking. Wow, this slow burn of a book gutted me; it was not the light and sweet ode to books that I expected. Thankfully, it was so much more!
