The Red Pencil seeks to fill a vacuum in children's literature of historical fiction dealing with the genocide in Darfur. I was excited about this novel, placing a hold on it at the library before it was released and anxiously awaiting for its arrival in our stack of new books. I have to say that while this book addresses some of the issues surrounding the War in Darfur, I was disappointed that this book barely skims the surface.

I loved this book. Loved the artwork and the poetic story of a 12 year old Sudanese girl whose loses her home and lives in a refugee camp. Her dream is to go to school and to read, write and draw. Very poignant and touching.
