Maybe at a different time or place, I just couldn't get into this book and struggled through it.

This book is Obioma's debut novel and it is a very good one. Set in late 90s Nigeria, it is a story of a group of brothers whose father had high hopes for their individual successes. Then a prophesy told by a local madman begins to unravel the future of this family until it spirals into tragedy.
This book is well written and the story well told. I found that Obioma was able to capture both the heart and the spirit of Nigeria by telling his story through the eyes of one family.

This book set in Nigeria follows a large family of boys trying to live up to the expectations of their parents in a challenging time. Beautifully written and painfully wrought, the trials these brothers endure are truly heartbreaking. Violent and sad, this one is powerful but not for the faint of heart.

a beautifully written book
