What is this???
Totally unexpected dark tale from Haruki Murakami :D Somehow the fantasy theme here reminds me more of Neil Gaiman's style. It's still enjoyable though, especially with all the beautiful illustrations and dark imaginings, and I love the format of this book so much (I read the pink cover one).

If you know anything about the fiction of Murakami, you probably know that it's highly likely to be fantastical, if not downright surreal. This short story/novella definitely fits that criteria -- perhaps too much so. The reader will follow a boy down the rabbit-hole of a maze beneath his local library, into a realm populated by a donut-making sheepman and a beautiful ghost-girl. There's no particular sense to be made of this -- it's much more mood than story, and for me, that's not enough. Inde

Like buying yourself a bar of dark, bitter chocolate...and then eating the whole thing in one sitting...
In some ways, this fantastical fable feels like something that could have been contained within 1Q84. It feels like the same tumble down the rabbit hole, the same quest for an unsuspecting hero. But '84 wants us to stretch our legs and wander around the landscape: TSL just wants us to look from the window of the moving train.

This took less than an hour to read; it has the same effect on my mind as an episode of 'Rick & Morty'--equal parts amusement and bemusement, and why are my thoughts here now?
*****Rambling Thoughts//Slight Spoiler*****
A sheep-man and a starling-girl make for interesting companions in which to climb out of the catacombs of a mental library (tongue in cheek). Is the library a place to go in order to learn, or is the library a place where books go to die? If knowledge makes a brain creamier, then ...more

I have read this before, but it is a quick tale so I gave it another listen as it qualified me for another completed step of a book challenge. This author’s books are difficult for me to enjoy, but always give me something to think about. And this one is entertaining enough to make a reread or enjoyment of a new format worthwhile.
