I will confess, Miss Gwen Meadows, chaperone extraordinaire, was always my least favorite part of the Pink Carnation series - so I was not so much looking forward to reading this book, which features a romance for Miss Gwen. But to my surprise, it is fantastic! When I can see inside her thoughts, and when she is paired with an equally quippy man (William Reid), I love her! I'm glad Willig followed her instincts and gave a second chance to some of her more memorable secondary characters in Gwen Meadows and William Reed - they each charmed on their own, but their interaction together makes for great fun. The plot is essentially silly and contrived (much like the gothic The Convent of Orsino Gwen is writing), but the romantic element is strong enough to carry it through. ...more
