What Members Thought

I was blown away by the ending. Seriously. It's so heartbreaking but so right. The story itself is very engaging, lots of drama, thrilling action and decent portion of romance. What I love the most is the struggle that Vianne and Isabelle have with their relationship as sisters. I love Vianne so much and for me she's the true Nightingale. Isabelle is ok, brave and heroic but she's just too self absorbed for my taste. Anyway, this is my first time reading Kristin Hannah and I'm glad to know that

If I could give a book 10 stars, The Nightingale would get it. Hands-down one of my all-time favorite novels. Hannah's writing, her character development, the setting of Paris and the French countryside during WWII, and all the rest, which I won't give away here.
I really love reading historical fiction and this story took me into the 1940's and France. Now, at 60 years old, I've fortunately been reading regularly since I was a child. This taught me so much and will stay with me. ...more

How fragile life was, how fragile they were.
Love.
It was the beginning and end of everything, the foundation and the ceiling and the air in between.
This is not a love story, but it is about love, and about the women who love.
There! Is that sappy enough for you? Hahaha... but I'm also being serious.
When I started this book, I was confident I was not going to like it. All my friends gave it five stars, but I knew it was going to be just like All the Light We Cannot See, a book I hated that ev ...more

Read for "Potluck and Prose" book club meeting of December 2016, which I was unable to attend. However, I was intrigued by the theme of this book so decided to read along.
I enjoyed listening to an audio version of this book, which explored the lives of the women left at home when their men go off to fight, the sacrifices they made, and the moral dilemmas they are faced with. The story, hinging on two very different sisters, takes us into the French resistance movement, and from what little I’ve ...more

WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW !!!!!!!!
This was an amazing novel . It captures you from the beginning and keeps you hooked until the end . Kristin captured the emotion of all the characters so well I could feel it myself . The fear , the worry , the wondering of how and if the families will survive , the fear of the nightingale being caught etc. It only took me so long to read cuz of being busy at work and not wanting to go forward because I was afraid what will happen . The ending was amazing ... a bitter ...more

Despite the fact that this book has gotten good reviews from many people whose reading tastes I respect, I somehow wasn't expecting to like it much. I had certain preconceived notions about the author, and was expecting it to be much fluffier than it turned out to be.
I learned a lot about the German occupation of France and the French resistance movement. I appreciated the perspectives of the characters as they struggled to find their own ways to stand up to evil and protect the people they love ...more
